Heart to Hang Onto Songtext
von Pete Townshend
Heart to Hang Onto Songtext
Johnny boy, he′s always propping up the bar
He sees life crystallized through his job
He says he only lives for beer
But his whole life is just a cry of fear
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a soul that's tailored new
Give me a heart to hang on to
A heart to hang on to
Sally seems to get bigger every day
She evens out in a contented way
A finger on the pulse of every guy
But deep in the night you can hear her cry
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a life that′s tailored new
Give me a heart to hang on to
A heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a soul that's tailored true
Give me a heart to hang on to
Danny boy, he wants to save for a new guitar
He wants to learn to play, but he won't get far
He thinks it′s an easy-going high
But his whole life is just another try
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a suit that′s tailored true
Give me a heart to hang on to
A heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a heart to hang on toAnd, and I, I, I think one of the
Things that it reflects is that moment in a woman's life where
She′s just about to, you know, she's been working behind the till
In the bank for 10 years, and she′s about to be made a, somebody
Higher up, an assistant bank manager or something, and as she sees
The job coming, she thinks, "Oh my God, I haven't had a baby yet."
So she has to get this message to her husband, who has said all along
"I will support you, I′ll stand by you, and you will be manager
Of the bank, and you will buy your own car. You mark my words
Young woman. And I won't interfere, I'll stand back and you can..."
There′s a difference, you know, between having a secret and having a
Dream. Because a dream, you have to share. And I think, you know, if
You wanna have a kid, if you wanna have a kid, you
Know, if you wanna have a child, if you wanna have a
Family, if you wanna do anything, you have to, you
Have to tell the other person that′s gonna be involved
It's a great privilege for me to have a little boy. He′s 11 years
Old now, and he's, um, now has this thing where I go to look after
Him and he says, "Dad, you know, can you show me the chords to a
Song?" I say, "Sure." So I get the guitars out and say, "You, what
Do, what do you want, what do you want me to give you the chords to?
" And he′s always got, he's always got some kind of, Blink-182, right?
"You fucked up my life!"
And I′m, you know, I love it, I think it's great. But what's so
Interesting, what′s so interesting is, is that, um, and yes, this
Could happen to you if you haven′t had children yet, I'm sure most
Of you have, but the drummer, the drummer in that band and the
Drummer in Offspring, the drummer in Limp Bizkit, the drummer in all
These bands where they′ve, you know, they've got some kind, some
Skateboard involved in it somewhere, or cockroach, cockroaches coming
Out of their mouth, those bands, you know, the ones they smash
Guitars, they do, they, and, anyway
The drummers play really fucking fast
I don′t know if, you know, when you try and play
The drums, you know, how long are they gonna be
Able to keep this up? We're very worried about them
I′m gonna move to the piano. There's
A kind of kit I put together here
He sees life crystallized through his job
He says he only lives for beer
But his whole life is just a cry of fear
Give me a heart to hang on to
Give me a soul that's tailored new
