Sweet Betsy From Pike Songtext

Diddley-eye, Did-eye, Diddle
Diddley-eye, Did-eye day

Oh, do you remember, sweet Betsy, from Pike
She crossed the big mountain, with her lover, Ike
With two yoke of oxen and a big, yeller dog
And a tall, Shanghai rooster, and one spotted hog

Diddley-eye, Did-eye, Diddle
Diddley-eye, Did-eye day

They soon reached the desert, where Betsy gave out
And down in the sand, she lay, rolling about
While Ike in great tears, looked on in surprise
Saying, "Betsy, get up, you′ll get sand in your eyes"

Diddley-eye, Did-eye, Diddle
Diddley-eye, Did-eye day

Betsy got up in a great deal of pain
She said she'd go back to Pike County again
But Ike gave a sigh, then they fondly embraced
And they traveled along, with his arm round her waist

(Ike and sweet Betsy, went out to a dance
And Ike wore a pair of his Pike County pants)
Betsy was dressed up, in ribbons and rings
Said Ike, "You′re an angel, but where are your wings?"

Diddley-eye, Did-eye, Diddle
Diddley-eye, Did-eye day

A miner said, "Betsy, will you dance with me?"
She answered, "I will, if you won't make too free"
"I can't dance too hard", "Do you want to know why?"
"Because I′m so full of that strong, alcoli"

Ike and sweet Betsy got married, of course
But Ike was so jealous, he got a divorce
Then Betsy, well satisfied, said, with a shout
"Goodbye forever, I′m glad you backed out"

Diddley-eye, Did-eye, Diddle
Diddley-eye, Did-eye day
